Methodology
Methodology and limitations
Best Cost of Living is designed to organize relocation assumptions. It is not a live pricing database and does not claim city-level precision.
What the workbook calculates
The workbook compares current monthly take-home pay and expenses against a target scenario. It estimates monthly breathing-room change, one-time moving-cost recovery time, post-move cash runway, and a simple risk label based on cash cushion and affordability pressure.
What you must verify elsewhere
- Tax withholding, payroll timing, and benefit deductions.
- Actual rent, mortgage, insurance, utilities, deposits, and local fees.
- School, childcare, commute, healthcare, and employment details.
- Moving quotes, lease terms, home sale proceeds, and professional advice.
Why we avoid fake precision
Cost-of-living averages can be useful, but a household decision depends on real listings, real quotes, and real constraints. Instead of publishing hundreds of thin location pages, this site focuses on a smaller workbook and planning library that help users make better assumptions.
